|The Oxylator® EM-100 is a new oxygen
powered resuscitator intended to provide emergency ventilatory
support. Ventilation may be performed using a mask or an endotracheal
In victims trapped in a car wreck, it often is impossible to
perform bag-valve-mask ventilation by two persons because of
the lack of room or personnel.
In a moderate car on an ALS-trainer mannequin (Laerdal, Stravanger,
Norway) was positioned in the drivers seat, simulating a trapped
person who needed to be ventilated immediately. In the "trachea"
a respiratory mechanics monitor was built in (VentCheck, Novametrix,
U.S.A.) to measure the ventilatory performances.
Five ambulance nurses and five emergency doctors were asked
to ventilate the mannequin either by bag-valve-mask or by use
of the Oxylator® EM-100 during five five minutes without
assistance of a second person. Minute volume was set to more
than 7 litres/min. Further, ERC Guidelines were followed.
We found that:
||Only one person was able to ventilate
adequately by bag-valve-mask in contrast with all when
using the Oxylator® EM-100
||Air leak via the mask on the face
was not recognized with bag-valve-mask in contrast with
all 10 when using the Oxylator® EM-100
||Obstruction was sooner detected
with the Oxylator® EM-100
Conclusion: The Oxylator® EM-100 is a useful tool in pre-hospital
emergency ventilatory care, especially when there is a lack
of space around the patient.
